Is there a way to allow students to use the chat window to work collaboratively without sharing control of the panels and writing over each other's work?

I'm teaching math, the students have writing tablets, so they can solve problems by writing on the panel. I'd like to put them in a group of four so they can ask each other questions on how to do the problem, but they each solve it in their own notebook.
