DyKnow Vision FAQs

How is DyKnow Vision different than other classroom interaction software?

Other software programs may help teachers accomplish some aspect of classroom interaction like screen broadcast, content replay or student response. DyKnow Vision, however, eliminates the need for disparate systems. Teachers and students can leverage the power of content delivery, collaborative note taking, student response tools, replay and anywhere, anytime access in one easy-to-use interface.

In addition, DyKnow Vision uses a client-server design. This means that DyKnow Vision can scale from a few users to hundreds of users without an interruption in usage. DyKnow Vision is optimized in both wired and wireless environments. Teachers and students can roam freely around the room or even be at a distance and still experience the full functionality.

DyKnow Vision can be purchased with DyKnow Monitor, DyKnow’s classroom management software that allows teachers a birds-eye view of all classroom computer screens and the ability to block distracting programs or URLs. Together, these products use only one interface to keep students on task and foster interaction in the classroom. Both DyKnow Vision and DyKnow Monitor can be easily managed through a web-based interface.

DyKnow also offers personal training and an identified customer relationship manager who assists schools through all aspects of the DyKnow deployment. In addition, DyKnow’s technical support team is US-based and there are no hold times.

What is a client-server design?

Both DyKnow Vision and DyKnow Monitor utilize a client-server design to transmit information between teacher and student computers. This means that all information being transmitted through the DyKnow products is offloaded to a server, then transmitted to other users in the class. Schools can utilize their own server or information can be transmitted through DyKnow’s ASP hosting service.

The client-server design is the opposite of peer-to-peer or multicast networked environments where computers communicate with each other instead of with a server.  With peer-to-peer products, performance can slow dramatically when there are more than a few users, especially in wireless environments where the limited bandwidth is shared among all connected users.  The client-server design allows DyKnow software to be a scalable so that many students and teachers can utilize the software simultaneously without significant decreases in performance.

Does the software work in wireless environments?

DyKnow Vision and DyKnow Monitor are designed for 802.11x environments. The client-server design ensures that DyKnow products use to scale from a few users to hundreds of users without an interruption in usage.

How is the software licensed? What is the cost?

DyKnow Vision is licensed per computer and is purchased as a perpetual license, allowing customers to use the software forever. Visit the DyKnow Vision pricing page.

How is training delivered?

Because DyKnow Vision works easily over a distance, training is most often delivered live virtually through DyKnow Vision. Training is coordinated and delivered by a customer relationship manager who is assigned to each school and sees the school through the implementation and training process. Customer relationship managers also provide a resource to schools on how to optimize DyKnow usage.

Does the software work on a Mac computer?

At this time there is not a version of DyKnow Vision or DyKnow Monitor that runs on Mac OS X. Some customers do use DyKnow Vision on the Mac platform through Windows emulators such as Parallels Desktop (http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/).

What hardware do I need to run the software?

Because DyKnow Vision runs using a client-server design, schools must utilize a server to transmit information between teacher and student computers. If a school does not have access to a server running Microsoft SQL Server software http://dyknow.com/vision/techspecs.aspx), DyKnow offers ASP hosting services. The DyKnow sales team can review ASP hosting pricing for any institution sales@dyknow.com).

Does DyKnow support server virtualization?

DyKnow does support VMWare server virtualization. Visit recommended specs (http://www.dyknow.com/service-support/server-specs.aspx).

Does the software integrate with my other systems?

DyKnow Vision and DyKnow Monitor can currently be set up to authenticate to Microsoft Active Directory LDAP and most versions of Blackboard Learning Management System. The benefit is that system administrators must only enter student names and class rosters once and both systems are updated. More on Blackboard here (http://www.dyknow.com/service-support/faq-blackboard.aspx).

DyKnow Vision also features a virtual printer plug-in called Notebook Writer which allows users to send content from any third party application into the DyKnow Vision interface.
