How a Teacher Keeps Her Students On Task In a Digital Environment

We understand that classroom management is not just about the software that teachers use in their classrooms, but more importantly, it’s about the process that teachers implement to make sure their students are staying on task. The most effective teachers in our community have two things in common. One, they apply a process in their classroom that creates an environment to maximize instructional time. Two, they have a supporting staff that helps them adapt to the technology changes in K12 education.

We connected with Barbara Delgado, a 6th-grade teacher at Sunnyside Elementary about their 1:1 (one-to-one) student device program and how she gets support. Sunnyside Elementary is a part MSD of Lawrence Township located in Indianapolis, Indiana (home of Dyknow). Lawrence has 15,000+ students and is made up of 17 schools. Their district uses a mixed environment of Chromebooks, PC, and Macbooks.

What ways are you maximizing your student device program in your classroom?

Our 6th-grade students have 1:1 student devices that we utilize on a daily basis. We use the Google suite and Canvas frequently. Since our school uses Pearson products, we use their website as well. I also incorporate online sources to supplement student learning.

How are you working with tech roles and admins on the use of technology in schools?

We have e-coaches in our build for support. Our tech department is good about sending updates and tech information to us on a weekly basis. As a member of the district’s computer science curriculum committee and my school’s STEM committee, I interact with education technologists regularly.

What tips can you provide on how to maximize instructional time with technology?

Honestly, Dyknow has been a godsend. Being able to block the “play” sites while students work helps keep them focused on what they should be working on. Also, I love Dyknow’s messaging capability. When I see students struggling with something I can give feedback and redirect their poor choices to get them focused.

We’ll continue to highlight the teacher’s voice on this blog and are always willing to take recommendations on topics that you or your school find helpful as technology continues to change K12 education.
